View our best moments captured on the Sarajevo Tunnel of Hope tour
Discover the role and importance of the “Tunnel of Hope” for the local people during the Siege of Sarajevo.
The Tunnel was dug in 1993, and it was the only light in the darkness of the besieged Sarajevo in the 1990s. Our guide will explain the reasons and consequences of the Bosnian War and how it came to an end.
On the way to the Tunnel, you will see the National Library, The Marketplace Markale where one of the biggest massacres happened, The Sniper Alley and Holiday Inn Hotel where foreign journalists stayed during the war.
We begin the tour in the heart of Sarajevo at Markale Market, a central location deeply marked by the tragic events of the 1990s. During the siege, the market was targeted in one of the deadliest attacks on civilians. Today, it stands as both a working market and a memorial site — a powerful introduction to the tour’s theme.
Next, we follow the path of Sniper Alley, one of the most dangerous streets during the Sarajevo siege. Once a vital artery of the city, this boulevard was heavily exposed to sniper fire from surrounding hills. Your guide will share personal stories and explain how residents tried to survive daily life under constant threat.
The final and most impactful stop is the Tunnel of Hope (Tunel Spasa) Museum, located near Sarajevo Airport. This hand-dug tunnel played a crucial role in the city’s survival, serving as a secret lifeline for food, medicine, and people during the siege. You’ll walk through a preserved section of the tunnel, see original wartime footage, and explore exhibits that tell the story of resistance, ingenuity, and survival.
