Next, the tour continues to Jajce, a town famous for its stunning waterfall in the city centre, ancient catacombs, royal heritage, and layered history spanning from Roman times to World War II. You’ll explore sacred landmarks, walk through centuries-old ruins, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Pliva Lake with its iconic wooden watermills.

Itinerary

Travnik

The journey begins in Sarajevo, heading west through scenic countryside to reach Travnik — a town known for its colourful Ottoman architecture and rich cultural legacy. Travnik is the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, the celebrated Bosnian author and 1961 Nobel Prize winner for literature. While here, you’ll also have a chance to see the 15th-century medieval fortress, a reminder of Travnik’s role as the capital of the Bosnian Eyalet during Ottoman rule.

Jajce

Next, we visit Jajce, a town built at the meeting point of rivers and empires. Famous for its 18-meter-high waterfall located in the very centre, Jajce is one of the few cities in the world with such a natural feature at its heart. Beyond the waterfall, the town carries layers of history — from Roman and Byzantine times to the Austro-Hungarian period and the WWII-era Second AVNOJ Conference, which marked a turning point in Yugoslav history.

The Pliva lake

To round off the experience, we’ll visit Pliva Lake, a peaceful and crystal-clear natural oasis near Jajce. Along the lake’s edge stand the famous wooden watermills once used by locals to grind grain into flour — a rare sight and a beautiful blend of nature and tradition. This stop offers time to relax, take in the views, and enjoy a quiet end to the day before returning to Sarajevo.
